How we change the world: Ethics, power, and leadership in tech - Laurel Lawson

Knowledge is power and software is leverage. We have the ability to create change with each commit made, feature built, team led, product shipped. How can you use your power for good? Whether you’re a tester, developer, engineer, designer, manager, product owner, or founder, your voice and actions matter. We’ll think about some common situations and patterns and how we make changes large and small. Unfortunately, the dark side has cookies. Laurel is a co-founder and CTO at CyCore Systems, a consultancy specializing in solving novel multi-realm problems. She leads product architecture with a data-driven focus on highly performant usability and contextual interfaces. A veteran activist and community leader, Laurel is active as a leader and mentor in organizations working for inclusion and disability rights. She is a founding city leader for the Atlanta chapter of AnitaB.org, which hosts events for mid-career, senior, and executive women and nonbinary people in tech, and is a key organizer for the nationwide celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Laurel is also a working dancer and choreographer, performing with both Full Radius Dance and Kinetic Light, and is the designer and product lead of Audimance, which creates a novel nonvisual way of experiencing performing art through virtual environments. When not at the computer or in the studio, she’s likely to be found on the ice; Laurel is also a member of the USA Women’s Sled Hockey team.
