In June 2020, I joined PepsiCo eCommerce and was asked to build a new team that would focus on creating user interfaces for some of the data products being built within the organization. We knew that we wanted to use Elixir, we had a rough idea what the first project would be, and we needed to deliver that project by the end of the year. In this talk, I will present a case study of how we built that team, what went right, and what went wrong. I will discuss the major technical decisions that we made, why we made those decisions, and the long term impact of those decisions. Finally, I will talk about the two secret ingredients that ran through everything and were key to helping us build a successful team: Elixir and Lean software development.
