try! Swift Tokyo Conference 2018 - try! Swift is an immersive community gathering about Apple Technologies, Swift Language Best Practices, Application Development in Swift, Server-Side Swift, Open Source Swift, and the Swift Community in Tokyo! Topic - UIImageView vs Metal Speaker - Shuichi Tsutsumi Twitter - https://twitter.com/shu223 Bio - Shuichi has been a freelance iOS developer in Tokyo, and works for Fyusion Inc. in San Francisco since 2016. Co-authored “iOS x BLE Core Bluetooth Programming” (2015) and authored “iOS Programming - Advanced 100 Recipes” (2013). He is the creator of some popular OSS repositoriessuch as iOS Sampler series. Abstract - Metal is an API that provides access to the GPU. Apple announced it's 10x times faster than OpenGL. In this session, I'll explain the basics of Metal, then compare the performance of graphics rendering with UIImageView. Even if you don't use the API directly, your app is implicitly benefitting from Metal. This comparison to a familiar class will lead you to be conscious of the GPU layer that we usually miss.
