Why the world loves K-pop by Chrys Wu Visit https://rstats.ai/nyr/ to learn more. Abstract: This talk explores the many facets of K-pop, starting with groups like BTS and Blackpink and diving further into fandom to see trends and influences. In this “fun with R” / “hobby R” talk we’ll also explore things like release and promotion schedules, connections, and influences so we can enjoy and understand more about how this genre has been shaping popular culture. Bio: Chrys Wu is a product and program consultant with a wide variety of interests. She cares deeply about people and the systems in which they live and work, and believes that just as society shapes culture, culture shapes society. Those motivations led her to co-found Write/Speak/Code (https://www.writespeakcode.com/) and Hacks/Hackers (https://www.hackshackers.com/) and be a trustee (emeritus) of The Awesome Foundation (https://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/nyc). In the context of K-pop, she’s a Shawol though she knows the music (and more!) of lots of groups and singers. Chrys has not spoken to large groups of people in a very long time thanks to the pandemic, so be kind. She will be awkward but enthusiastic.
